Have you ever tried to open a Microsoft Excel table in SolidWorks and gotten the following message: “Failed to open server application”?
If you search the SolidWorks Knowledge Base for that message you will find that this is usually attributed to an issue with Excel add-ins. There are two specific Solutions that I have found; they are S-00783 & S-019895.
After some further investigation, with the assistance of a few of my customers, we have found one specific add-in that seems to be the culprit. I have had a couple of cases that the add-in “Power Pivot” was installed on a customer computer. Once that add-in was turned off, they could double click on an Excel table and open it.
If turning off this add-in doesn’t resolve the issue, you might have to turn off other add-ins too. This is just a starting point.
If you get that error, take a look at your Microsoft Excel add-ins. If you have “Power Pivot”, turn it off and see if this fixes your issue. Here is a link to Microsoft’s website for assistance in turning off the add-ins in Excel: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/enable-or-disable-add-ins-in-office-programs-HA010034127.aspx#top.
