There are times when I want to email a document to a vendor or a customer a PDF but I want to make sure that, in the off chance that it falls into the wrong hands, it cannot be opened. This functionality is normally reserved for Adobe Acrobat Professional. However, I found that you can use an open source software to do the same thing.
The software is called PDF Creator. I've been personally using this for years and it works well. Simply install it and create the PDF print driver. Then, you have the option to select the PDF options and are able to set passwords for anyone who wants to view or edit the document prior to creating the PDF. It also helps you protect intellectual property by disallowing users from copying information from the PDF. Below is a screenshot from their web page.
Enjoy and I hope that we'll have a warm winter!

Same can be accomplished online (also free) at http://www.pdfprotect.net

I do know a good PDF security application, it help you to protect PDF files from unauthorized access with standard password security. Support 40/128 bit RC4 and 128 AES encryption, it's very good.
